Mix Tape

So I'm headed to a family reunion up in Washington in a few weeks. I don't mind this drive as Amy lets me listen to my iPod most of the time. I like to switch up the music as I am driving through different stretches of the trip. For example, during the stretch through Idaho I listen to The Triggerlock's as there is a turn off called Idahome Rd. Now are there certain other situations that call for certain music? Does Bob Marley really sound better on Saturday mornings than any other day? Should it be a rule to listen to Wilco anytime you take drive through the desert? Do you always listen to the band your going to see? Travis, are you still a Misfit?

There's still a song or 2 that makes pump my fist. Lately, I find my self wanting to make mixes for situations--sitting on the porch on a winter night when you can see your breath--or destinations, and I have this desire to avoid songs that seem like mix tape fodder--the single or hit of the record. Do you shuffle the ipod or make mixes.

I love the mix. There is no substitute for music to recall a particular time or place. When we were traveling in Europe we always made sure to put together a little soundtrack for different destinations. Mandi can attest that those songs work like magic to get a bit more out of the experiences. "Impossible Germany" in the tunnels in Italy. Serge Gainsbourg anywhere in France or driving through Mont Blanc with Menomena.

Also, Jane's Addiction can't sound better than when it's played in southern California.

I am more a fan of the shuffle than the mix. I do agree that there are certain songs that focus the minds eye on an expirence of a time gone by. However, if you are always focused on yesterday you might let today slide right past.
