The Hindus have AUM--the sound present at the creation--which encompasses all other sounds, words, languages, and mantras. The purpose of the mantra is to bring the mind into focused concentration. You can use it to steer your mind from harmful thoughts or to travel into meditation. Ultimately, we must learn to control our bodies and minds, and a mantra can be a tool that anyone can use. Let it be a scripture, a poem, a lyric, a phrase, or a word. Whatever you choose make sure it is simple to remember and positive. Right now, I'm searching for a mantra. Anyone have any ideas?
BTW, today is the 1st anniversary of visbits. Thanks to you guys it's better than ever.

What's Your Mantra?

I actually have a mantra that I have used for about ten years now. I use it on the tee box, during self-hypnosis, and before Ambien, when I was trying to induce sleep. It is one word, and it seems to be helpful. I would divulge, but I think people would use it to torment me, thus making it less effective. I'm a big believer in mantras, and the benefits it can provide. Trav, I will try to think of a couple for you. McCain has a nice cadence. Consider it.
McCain, I though this was supposed to induce peace and the like.... I digress. What about a visual mantra? Maybe the memory of every detail during some great moment in your past. How about creating such a place for an experience that has yet to happen? Thoughts?
Oh, if only McCain weren't such a war hawk… and if he weren't John McCain… Still undecided though, Mandi; maybe I'll change my mind. A couple of weeks ago I formulated a personal mantra of sorts, but agree with Mandi that it might ruin its effectuality to disclose it here.
I did know a man who used the following scripture as his mantra and thought it to be nicely rounded for how simple it was, "What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"
I'm sure a visual could work--anything to bring your mind to focus. Perhaps a mother's breast. With our heightened adult consciousness we could bring the same peace to our lives that the teat brings to a suckling child's.
Trav's a perv. Ronnow, not to brag, but I have visual mantra also. I call it my happy place. I tried to use my happy place and self-hypnosis in lieu of anesthesia for a root canal. It was the most painful experience of my life. I couldn't cave though, because I pompously announced to my dentist that I was in a "higher place and didn't need his terrestrial medication". Again my higher plane was the catalyst to the most painful experience of my life. I use the happy place for other things, and it works just fine.
How about "you don't win friends with salad". It works for Homer.
I don't know if I'm officially aloud to comment, but I'm going to (and it's going to be a long one): I have a running mantra, when I actually run (and I'm not afraid to share it here). It's "run like a boy". This is to help me remember to pump my arms and not let them rest on my sides like a silly girl. It also helps me to get in a tougher frame of mind and run harder. Although according to Trav I still look like someone is trying to give me a wedgie when I run (I know, totally rude to say to your beautiful, loving, supportive wife who's just trying to better her life and be healthier for her husband and children), but at least I feel like I'm pretty bad ass.
Mathis... I actually laughed out loud. No one was around to hear it, but out loud it was. Thanks.
